All we can do is feel what we feel and not run from it. Hopefully writing about it helps move it on a bit for you.

I see what you mean about the intimate feel of neighbours. We really do feel a bit of a connection. They’re part of our universe.

I didn’t know much about the lady next door except the occasional word in passing, but I saw her with her teenaged children and met them on the street sometimes. When she had a heart attack and passed away, it hit me unexpectedly, like a slow rolling panic attack. I still think about her grieving family years later. They moved away soon after.

Yeah - the grief over a neighbour thing is a weird thing to process, right?

Our other neighbours had an awful accident where their 18 month old daughter drowned in the back yard. Strangely, it occurred on the same holiday weekend as this event happened, just a few years earlier. Again, we didn't know them well but have witnessed some very intimate moments. It's one of those situations where you want to be supportive but it's almost like if you tried to get to know them better it'd make them feel really uncomfortable.

But thanks for reading, and for the thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it.
